...nach einigen Jahren in der Versenkung ist sie wieder retour: Damn Small Linux (DSL) ist zurück - jetzt nach Jahren wieder am Start DSL24 - und ich finde, dass es neben Puppy-Linux echt ein toller Kandidat ist.


Wir hatten das neulich auch besprochen. Die "Balkanisierung" in der Linux-Landschaft - sie ist im Grunde ja auch einer der Punkte, die man eher kritisch sehen kann. So gesehen ists kein Gewinn dass wir soo viele Distris haben..

The New DSL 2024 has been reborn as a compact Linux distribution tailored for low-spec x86 computers. It packs a lot of applications into a small package. All the applications are chosen for their functionality, small size, and low dependencies. DSL 2024 also has many text-based applications that make it handy to use in a term window or TTY. DSL 2024 currently only ships with two window managers: Fluxbox and JWM. Both are lightweight, fairly intuitive, and easy to use.

Damn Small Linux [ˈdæm ˌsmɔːl ˈlɪnʊks] (DSL [ˌdiː ɛs ˈɛl], deutsch verdammt kleines Linux) ist eine englischsprachige Linux-Distribution, die sich von einer Visitenkarten-CD (50 MB) starten lässt. Das Damn-Small-Linux-Projekt wurde von John Andrews und Robert Shingledecker ins Leben gerufen und basierte ursprünglich auf Knoppix. Heute basiert Damn Small Linux auf Debian GNU/Linux. Kurzzeitig geriet die Entwicklung ins Stocken, da sich der Erfinder nicht mit dem Hauptentwickler einigen konnte.[1]

Eigenschaften: Damn Small Linux ist dafür konzipiert, auch auf alten Rechnern mit veralteter Hardware (zum Beispiel mit 486er-Architektur, 16 MB RAM und kleinen Festplatten unter 54,0 MB) zu laufen. Die Distribution lässt sich sowohl als Live-CD verwenden als auch auf der Festplatte installieren. Sie kann sogar in einem MS-Windows-Fenster gestartet werden (dsl-embedded), wie es beispielsweise auch bei TopologiLinux, Puppy Linux, CoLinux und WinLinux möglich ist. Aufgrund ihres geringen Speicherbedarfs bietet diese Distribution die Möglichkeit, komplett aus dem RAM (ab 128 MB) oder einem USB-Stick zu arbeiten.
Ab der Version 4.0 wird der Linux-Kernel 2.4.31 verwendet. Ab der Version 3.0 wird bei DSL das Dateisystem UnionFS verwendet, bei dem die Möglichkeit besteht, im Live-Betrieb lokale Dateien zu ändern und somit zum Beispiel Programme nachzuinstallieren.

Creating the original DSL, a versatile 50MB distribution, was a lot of fun and one of the things I am most proud of as a personal accomplishment. However, as a concept, it was in the right place at the right time, and the computer industry has changed a lot since then. While it would be possible to make a bootable Xwindows 50MB distribution today, it would be missing many drivers and have only a handful of very rudimentary applications. People would find such a distribution a fun toy or something to build upon, but it would not be usable for the average computer user out of the gate.

Meanwhile, in 2024, nearly everyone has abandoned the sub-700MB size limit to run on computers old enough to not have a DVD and cannot boot off of a USB drive. This is completely understandable because applications, the kernel, and drivers have all mushroomed in their space requirements. Hats off to Puppy Linux for staying one of the few that still offer a full desktop environment in a small size.
