Dear WU Beta testers,

On July 13, 2004, Windows Update (WU) will have a site content refresh. One of the critical updates has a known install failure and re-offering issue on the WU v5 beta site. Here is some information for our WU v5 beta site users regarding this potential problem and its work-around.

Issue:

·    When beta users with Windows XP or Windows XP SP1 computers visit the WU v5 site, you will be offered a few newly released updates, one of which is "Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)" (<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842773>).
·    KB842773 will also be offered if Automatic Updates on Windows XP or XP SP1 detects and downloads updates from the WU v5 site.
·    KB842773 will not be offered to Windows XP SP2 computers, unless users uninstall XP SP2, go back to Windows XP SP1 or Windows XP, and then try to access the WU v5 site.

Results after installing KB842773:

1.    If a previous version of KB842773 is already installed on the machine, the new KB842773 update may fail to install from the WU v5 site on first attempt.
2.    If you receive an error during the first install, the next time you visit the WU v5 site, KB842773 will be re-offered. This time the install will succeed and you may be asked to reboot the machine.
3.    When you return to the WU v5 site, you will again be re-offered KB842773. This behavior will continue to repeat.
4.    Meanwhile, on a restart, when the system services attempt to start BITS, it will fail to do so. When you try to start the BITS service, you will receive the error "The specified module could not be found". Also, "%windir%\system32\qmgr.dll" doesn't exist on the machine.

Resolution for this known issue:

1.    After the second install of KB842773 (step 3 above), go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall KB842773.
2.    Return to the WU v5 site and re-install KB842773.

To examine whether or not you have experienced the problem described in this email, please use the following procedure to verify that the BITS service can be started.

·  To verify if BITS service can be started
    a.  Right-click My Computer and select Manage.
    b.  Expand the Services and Applications node, and click Services.
    c.  The Background Intelligent Transfer Service Status field should report that it is "Started".

·  If not, highlight the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and click the Start VCR button (the "u"button) from the toolbar menu at the top of the console, to start this service.
OR
    a.  Click Run from the Start menu
    b.  Type "net start bits" (or "net stop bits") at the command line.

·  If there are no error messages while starting the service, then BITS service is running successfully on the machine.

Please let us know if you have any questions regarding this work-around.
Thank you!
