I've tried switching beween IDE and AHCI modes in the bios but it doesn't change anything. Both distros simply can't recognise any sata drives attached to the ICH10 southbridge, USB works fine though...
I just realised that the ICH10/R doesn't support native IDE ports anymore, thats handled by another controller on the motherboard so I might have 2 driver problems on my hands.
Eh, I'll play around with it a bit more tonight and extract some precise info about what's detected on the system.
Edit: Just shows how green I am with linux, SUSE 11 found the sata drives, I just needed to mount them manually via terminal, works for both IDE and AHCI modes. However the IDE drive on the same external controller as the DVD burner I'm booting the live cd from isn't appearing in /dev/disk/by-label...
Edit 2: Mounted all the UUID's in /dev/disk/, the IDE drive came up.
Problem Solved.
