Windows XP SP2 doch nicht für alle
Nachdem in der Vergangenheit von Mircosoft Produktchef Barry Goffe geäußert wurde, dass sich das SP2 für Windows XP auf allen -auch auf raubkopierten Systemen- installieren lassen würde, da die Sicherheit aller Windows Anwender im Vordergrund stehe (wir berichteten), wurde dieses Statement nun von einem Microsoft Pressesprecher im Interview mit BetaNews herftigst dementiert.

Demnach erfolgt bei der Installation des SP2 ein Abgleich der verwendeten "Product ID"mit einer Liste illegaler Nummern um evtl. eine Installation des SP2 auf nicht rechtmäßig erworbenen Systeme zu verhindern.

SP1 came and went and the non 640 keys were not blacklisted after all. now it looks like they got around to it.

you can check your PID by hitting Windowskey+Pause or by going to System in Control Panel. the first screen, under Registered to, has a long number in this form:

XXXXX-64X-XXXXXXX-XXXXX

if it's 640, you're fine unless you're running one of the keys specifically blacklisted (like the FCKGW one). anything from 641-649 and you'll find that installing this build and any that come after it impossible.

i can verify this. My old key was XXXXX-648-XXXXXXX-XXXXX and it would lock me out. I happened to stumble upon a valid XXXXX-640-XXXXXXX-XXXXX key (actually quite a few) and reinstalled with that key. Works great so everybody check your PID, if its 641 to 649 then DO NOT install this service pack before changing your key.
