Pale Moon 19.0

Changelog:
  • Update of the underlying Firefox (gecko) code to v19. This has a number of consequences:
    • Add-ons and themes may need to be updated since the UI code has changed.
I'm aware that this may be inconvenient for users with a lot of add-ons installed, but the core engine changes are of too great importance not to push forward. Add-ons compatible with the v15 code base may not work properly or at all on the new release because of the far-reaching changes to the rendering engine, CSS and HTML5 implementations and evolving standards. It is strongly recommended not to force compatibility (changing files in xpi or telling pale Moon not to check extension compatibility) but instead to find updates for your add-ons, or, if no "Firefox 19" compatible versions are available, look for alternatives with the same functionality.

    • HTML5-implementation is more complete.
More elements of the still-evolving HTML5 standard have been implemented, giving the browser more functionality and features for web developers to use.

    • A number of CSS statements have their prefix removed (-moz*).
CSS statements that were considered provisional or experimental have been finalized, and the syntax with the provisional prefix "-moz-" has been replaced with the finalized CSS syntax. For example, "-moz-transition:" should no longer be used, but instead "transition:".

    • Javascript now uses the IonMonkey engine by default, which is a new (faster) engine.
IonMonkey has been some time in the making, and is included in Pale Moon 19.0 and enabled by default. It replaces the previous engine ("JägerMonkey"), but both engines are still included in thebrowser. If required for some reason, e.g. if a breaking issue pops up with the IonMonkey engine, you can switch engines by setting a preference and restarting the browser. (javascript.options.ion.content)

    • Improvements to the layout and rendering engines
The most important improvements in the gecko v19 core are improvements to the layout and rendering engine. This is all under-the-hood, to improve page display speed and the use of your GPU if possible.

    • If you are using a language pack, you need to update it to the latest version!
Pale Moon normally refuses to run an older language pack but if you have disabled version checking in the browser, you will end up with a non-working language pack when updating that will prevent the browser from starting. If this happened, you can start Pale Moon in safe mode and download the proper language pack for v19.0

  • Update of the browser style. Main browser controls and the padlock look slightly different.
This style change was mainly prompted by a strange glitch in the back/forward button, making it not work as it should with the Pale Moon theme and layout. The navigation controls have been slightly re-styled, specifically for disabled controls. To streamline the overall theme, the older "striped" padlock has been replaced with a look similar to the rest of the controls; Also a change in color from yellow to blue for regular HTTPS to stay in line with the rest of the identity panel.

  • Several Pale Moon specific improvements to the rendering engine, noticeable in general use and certain benchmarks, to prevent browser stalls or high CPU usage on certain pages.
This includes, among other things, improvements to scaled images (e.g. IE Chalkboard test) and certain types of gradients that are off-loaded to the GPU for rendering. Specific attention has been paid to mitigate a number of regressions present in current releases of Firefox, that would in fact cause the browser to stall or become completely unresponsive; most of these issues and solutions to them are Windows-specific.

  • The builds no longer use PGO (Profile Guided Optimization) but are globally speed-optimized.
PGO has shown to be less effective in VS2012 on the Mozilla code, and the workarounds/tradeoffs to circumvent compiler issues can, as a result, be removed, resulting in code that is optimized better overall. This decision is in line with the move away from synthetic benchmarks and towards overall browser smoothness and performance in daily use.

Main points where this release differs from Firefox 19:
  • The in-browser PDF viewer is not enabled
Pale Moon's approach has always been that the browser should remain a browser, not spread thin over multiple disciplines or opening up security issues by integrating and enabling potentially exploitable code. The PDF viewer code for in-line viewing of PDF documents is present but disabled by default. It is provided as an emergency measure only (just like in v15) and you are at all times strongly urged to use a standalone, external viewer for PDF files.
The PDF viewer has been available in Firefox Aurora and Beta builds for a number of months, and Mozilla has finally pushed it through to the release channel, but this is despite the fact Mozilla has acknowledged the existence of “several UX/rendering/stability concerns”.
You can still enable this code, at your own risk, by setting pdfjs.disabled to false and restarting the browser. Be aware that you will be missing more advanced features like form filling that you may find in a proper external viewer, and I will not provide official support for this PDF viewer or the potential rendering, stability or security issues there are involved in using this Javascript-based, in-browser viewer.

  • Several user interface items are present that were removed from Firefox
    • In Firefox, switching Tabs to the bottom once they have been placed on top has to be done through about:config - Pale Moon retains the context menu option in both directions
    • In Firefox, there no longer is a "Send Page" or "Send Link" context menu item to quickly open a new e-mail message in the configured mail application with a link to the current page or pointed link. Pale Moon retains this feature.
    • In Firefox, the "Safe mode" startup dialog has one recovery function next to safe mode: reset the entire profile. Pale Moon retains several choices for troubleshooting and resetting parts of the profile, and completely resetting your profile is done from about:support instead.

Pale Moon 19.0.1

Changelog:
A minor update to pale Moon 19.0 has been released (sorry for the rapid succession update - the internal updater should be able to patch this with a <200kb download)

This fixes a number of small, yet important issues:
  • Fix for "Open bookmark in side bar" parsing error preventing bookmarks from being loaded in the side bar;
  • Fix for "double padlock" if a secure site would not have a favicon (would create a padlock in front and behind the ID panel text);
  • Fix for the https mixed content icon being paletted - it's been recreated;
  • Fixed a setting so no unnecessary code walking is done for the otherwise disabled accessibility features;
  • Fix (inherent) for compatibility issues with add-ons and themes with a minimum version of "19.0" on x64.

Pale Moon 20.0.1

Changelog:
New/updated/changed major features:
  • Per-window Private Browsing
You can find a good explanation of this new feature on Mozilla's website here.
  • Panel-based download manager
Following Firefox, Pale Moon 20 by default enables the panel-based download manager. Since you may not like either the downloads button feature or the actual panel display, they are configurable as follows:
If you prefer to use the classic download manager, you can do so from the status bar options:
Appmenu (Pale Moon button) -> Options -> Status bar options... -> Download -> "Use classic download window" (you may have to restart the browser after this change)
Note: You may lose your download history switching to the "classic" UI. There are also some potential cosmetic issues with the classic download manager window you may run into as it's not 100% supported anymore because of the "under the hood" changes to the way downloads are handled.
If the effects included with the downloads UI toolbar button cause issues (it will show an enlarged arrow fading towards the button when a download is started or finished, which may possibly cause slowdowns if your system can't use hardware acceleration in Pale Moon) you should remove the button from your navigation bar and instead use the status bar download indicator:
    • Right-click a toolbar and select "Customize..."
    • Drag the Download arrow button from your navigation bar to the customization window to remove it from the UI (this will appear as an arrow icon with "downloads" under it)
    • Find the other down arrow with "Download status" under it and drag it down to the status bar (by default left of the progress meter, but anywhere you prefer)
    • Close the customization window
    • Go to Options -> Status bar options... -> Downloads and check "Always show the downloads indicator"

  • Ability to close hanging plugins, without the browser hanging.
  • Performance improvements related to common browser tasks.
  • Pale Moon specific Cairo performance fix for scaling/panning/zooming of HTML5 drawing surfaces.
Current releases of Firefox have issues with particularly large drawing surfaces. Pale Moon implements a fix for this to prevent performance issues caused by this, which can be seen very clearly on e.g. the MSIE 10 Test Drive Chalkboard test (warning: trying to run this test in Mozilla Firefox will hang the browser and will take a very long time to finish.)

  • Pale Moon specific fixes for performance of drawing elements (gradients, etc.).
A number of smaller fixes have been implemented to further reduce processor usage when drawing certain graphical elements.

  • HTML5 canvas now supports blend modes.
  • Various HTML5 audio and video improvements
  • Update of the Status Bar code to work with the new code base.
This includes adding the setting for switching back to the classic download manager, updates for CSS parser changes, and the default set of tools no longer including the download status in the status bar (since it's included in the downloads button in the main navigation bar), as well as detections of full-screen modes and adjusting controls as-appropriate. Many thanks to Sparky Bluefang for continuing to update and improve the underlying Status-4-Evar add-on code without which the Pale Moon status bar would have been a lot harder to implement and especially maintain.

  • ECMAScript for XML (E4X) is kept available for add-ons. Note that this will be removed in future versions as E4X is obsolete.
Add-on users who still use this scripting technique are strongly urged to move to a different scripting technique, e.g. JXON or DOM-native. Please see the Mozilla E4X page for details about this issue. Firefox 20 already disables this feature, and from 21 onwards the code will be removed entirely because it is really obsolete.

  • Developer tools have been enabled by default, considering the code is practically impactless unless actually used.
The Web Developer tools have been partially disabled for a long time in Pale Moon, with an initial intention to completely remove the code. Initially, these tools would cause extra load and could slow down the browser, but with the improvements made in the underlying code base (e.g. IonMonkey, memory handling) as well as improvements in the build method for Pale Moon, the developer tools are no longer causing issues when enabled. Please do note that these web developer tools are provided AS-IS, and if you have any particular functionality issues with these tools, you should talk to the Mozilla team or fellow devtools users on this forum. I will not touch the devtools code or provide support for it.

  • Theming has been worked on to provide better contrast on glass/dark themes and to work around styling issues present in v19.
You will notice slightly colored, light icons on glass and dark themes, and the standard (previous) set of icons on light themes. HTTPS address bar shading (on by default) encompasses the entire address bar now. This shading may be a little less visible on dark themes or glass, but this will be improved in future versions of the browser.

  • Updated fallback character sets to Windows-1252 to properly adhere to the Encoding Standard.
This change should prevent some "page flashes" on web pages specifying a specific character set in <meta> tags in the header.
  • Restored legacy function key handling (uplifted from Firefox 22).
High-range function keys (F13-F24) should work properly again.
  • Fixed UNC path handling (Chemspill Firefox 20.0.1).
Address bar/search box would not work for Windows users whose profile resides in a network share. Eingefügtes Bild and other related bugreports. bug #846848
  • Always enable personas, also in Private Browsing mode
Firefox will remove personas (lightweight themes) in Private Browsing windows. Pale Moon restores the use of personas in all windows - the browsing mode should not affect personalization/customization, especially when there are clear other indicators present about the browsing mode used.
  • Experimental support for H.264 videos in HTML5.
This feature is experimental, has some known bugs, and may cause crashes or browser hangs, so is disabled by default. You have to manually enable it in about:config by setting the preference media.windows-media-foundation.enabled to true. This feature will only work on later Windows versions, likely only on Windows 7 and 8.
Security fixes relevant to Pale Moon:
  • MFSA 2013-30 A fairly large number of memory safety hazards (crashes/corruption/injection).
  • MFSA 2013-31 Out-of-bounds write in Cairo library (CVE-2013-0800)
  • MFSA 2013-34 Privilege escalation through Mozilla Updater (CVE-2013-0797)
  • MFSA 2013-36 Bypass of SOW protections allows cloning of protected nodes (CVE-2013-0795)
  • MFSA 2013-37 Bypass of tab-modal dialog origin disclosure (structural fix)
  • MFSA 2013-38 Cross-site scripting (XSS) using timed history navigations (CVE-2013-0793)
  • MFSA 2013-39 Memory corruption while rendering grayscale PNG images (CVE-2013-0792)
  • MFSA 2013-40 Crash fix: Out-of-bounds array read in CERT_DecodeCertPackage (CVE-2013-0791)

Pale Moon 20.1

This is a minor update with a number of security and stability fixes and a few small other changes.
Some new features of Firefox 21 have not been ported over to this version by design.

Changelog:
Changes:
  • Update of the libpixman graphics library to improve performance for SSE2 CPUs.
Some improvements are implemented in the optimized code paths for SSE2 instructions in the libpixman library.
  • Change to the "Clear download history" setting for use with the panel-based download manager (classic UI unaffected).
This change makes the UI clearer for privacy settings, to synchronize the setting for history&download in the preferences dialog box when the new download panel is used (since the new panel uses a history list for downloaded files in the library rather than a separate list). For panel downloads, both settings are now linked. For the classic download, a separate choice can be made for history and downloads as before.

New changes in Firefox code not included by design in this version of Pale Moon:
  • Removal of E4X - Pale Moon will keep this available until the next major release.
  • Removal of Places History API for add-ons.
More add-ons will be able to continue functioning if they make use of these APIs.
  • Addition of scoped stylesheet implementation.
This advocates the use of in-line styling in webpages (using style= parameters on elements instead of using classes and IDs), which is something we have been trying to move away from for some years now! It promotes using messy page code. Let's all keep things clean, shall we?
  • Implementation of FHR (Firefox Health Report - advanced usage/app metrics collection and submission).
Although it would allow users to get a bit more details about what is going on in their browser, the implementation is only partial to begin with, and there's no reason to add a potential privacy issue to Pale Moon in terms of telemetry-under-a-different-name.

Fixes:
  • (CVE-2013-1674) Fix for UAF with video and onresize event (crash fix)
  • (CVE-2013-1675) Fix for parameters being used uninitialized
  • (CVE-2013-1676) Fix for out-of-bounds read in SelectionIterator::GetNextSegment
  • (CVE-2013-1679) Fix for heap use-after-free in mozilla::plugins::child::_geturlnotify
  • (CVE-2013-1680) Fix for heap-use-after-free in nsFrameList::FirstChild (crash fix)
  • (CVE-2013-1681) Fix for heap-use-after-free in nsContentUtils::RemoveScriptBlocker (crash fix)
  • Fix for out-of-bounds read crash in PropertyProvider::GetSpacingInternal (crash fix)
  • Fix for out-of-bounds read in gfxSkipCharsIterator::SetOffsets
  • Fix for assertion failure in nsUnicharStreamLoader::WriteSegmentFun with ISO-2022-JP

Pale Moon 20.2.1

Changelog:
A small update to address issues with the new Aero glass theme, e.g. Tab Groups not showing.

Changelog der 20.2:
This is a maintenance update, focusing on visual improvements and security.

Changes:
  • Implementation of some conservative additional multi-core support (mainly in graphics/media) using OpenMP. I'm taking baby steps here and will remain conservative in the use of multiple cores so stability of the browser isn't needlessly endangered.
  • Update of the navigation button icons (again). Users have clearly indicated that the inverted color icons on glass and dark themes were less desirable. I've listened, and changed the icons for glass back to the pre-20 style but with added contrast, and made a distinction for dark personas (themes) where the icons are now simply inverted white (like in Firefox).
  • Change for the color management system (CMS) so that Pale Moon now supports more types of embedded ICC profiles (including the already decade-old version 4 spec) and in the process fixing potential color issues on screens with images that embed such profiles.
  • Update of the browser padlock code. You can now choose both a "modern" look (as introduced in version 19) and a "classic" look (as introduced in version 15, when this padlock feature was first added). It also removes some phantom spacing in locations where the padlock isn't used (thanks for the pointer, Sowmoots!). You can find instructions in the Pale Moon Tweak Guide (PMTG)

Fixes:
  • (CVE-2013-1692) Fix for the inclusion of body data in an XMLHttpRequest HEAD request, making cross-site request forgery (CSRF) attacks via a crafted web site more difficult.
  • (CVE-2013-1697) Fix to restrict use of DefaultValue for method calls, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code with chrome privileges.
  • (CVE-2013-1694) Fix to properly handle the lack of a wrapper, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code.
  • Fix to prevent arbitrary code execution from the profiler developer tool.
  • Fix for a crash when rapidly reloading pages.
  • Fix for cross-document selections.
  • Fixes for several crashes in JavaScript.
  • Fixes for several memory safety hazards and uncommon memory leaks.

Pale Moon 20.3

Changelog:
Changes:
  • A change to how tab histories are cached to improve the overall memory footprint and make browsing smoother, especially when using a large number of tabs with extensive active use.
  • A change to the networking pipelining back-end to use a more aggressive fallback if there are issues with pipelining requests, to minimize delays when loading pages and prevent time-outs.
  • Update of the compiler to Visual Studio 2012 Update 3, to fix a few compiler issues.
  • Removed the double entry for smooth scrolling selection in preferences (leaving just the one in the scrolling tab)

Fixes:
  • (CVE-2013-1704) ASAN heap-use-after-free in nsINode::GetParentNode
  • (CVE-2013-1708) Non-null crash at nsCString::CharAt
  • (CVE-2013-1712) Code injection through internal updater
  • (CVE-2013-1713) InstallTrigger can use the wrong principal when validating URI loads
  • (CVE-2013-1714) Cross Domain Policy override using webworkers
  • Fix for Updater crash
  • Fix for XSS vulnerability/URI spoofing
  • Fix for newly allocated WebGL array buffers (prevent the use of uninitialized memory)
  • Several fixes for the SSL crypto library (CVE-2013-1705 and others)
  • Fix for do_QueryFrame support
  • x64: Fix for Yarr error
  • Update to the installer's 7zsfx module to prevent dll hijacking

Portable version:
Important note for updating the portable version: it's recommended you make a fresh install of the portable and copy over your user profile to the new install with this update. Do not use the internal updater. Remember to check your user.ini if you have created one or changed .ini entries, and re-implement your changes in the 20.3 palemoon-portable.ini (don't just copy it over!)
  • Fix for safebrowsing
  • Enabled the XUL cache to improve startup times

Pale Moon 24.0
Eingefügtes Bild

Changelog:
This is a new major version with a lot of changes - too many to list all of them individually. The most important notes about this release:
  • Update of the underlying Mozilla code base (Gecko) to v24.0. Because of this change, Pale Moon's version number has jumped from 20 to 24, to keep it in line with the underlying Gecko version (for extension compatibility's sake)
  • Update of the Pale Moon icon/logo. As most of you have already seen, the Pale Moon logo has been updated from the previous painted design to a more eye-popping, crisper design. No, you cannot use it for your own purposes, it is © copyrighted.
Special thanks go to Roger Gómez del Casal for providing me with an interesting concept design image to use as a base for it!
  • Fixes for all relevant security vulnerabilities. With the update to Gecko v24.0, all fixes for newly found security vulnerabilities since Firefox 23-release have been incorporated.
  • Many changes and updates in the rendering, scripting and parsing back-end to provide significant improvements in overall browser performance (including the much overrated benchmark scores).
  • Addition of a number of HTML5 elements, improving overall HTML5 standards compliance. Curious what all is supported by Pale Moon v24.0? Put it to the test!
  • Implementation of the webaudio API (most features that are no longer draft). Webaudio is an emerging standard for the web, useful for e.g. HTML5 games. Pale Moon 24.0 implements all of the basic and some of the more advanced features of webaudio.
  • Removal of Tab Groups (Panorama). See also: http://forum.palemoo....php?f=3&t=2995
If you actively used this functionality, I have also made an add-on (Mozilla dev sourced) available to restore this feature to the browser.
  • Removal of a few additional Accessibility options. Since Pale Moon does not aim to provide accessibility features, the (default off) preferences for them that were left in the Options dialog have been removed. Specifically, this removes:
    • - Always using cursor navigation within pages. Pale Moon users will normally use a pointing device to use the browser and navigate pages.
    • - Search for text when I start typing. Potentially a really confusing option since it may make the page jump when typing if you don't have focus on an input field, and incompatible with the current implementation of some HTML5 elements.
    • - Warn me when websites try to redirect or reload the page. This feature is often misunderstood as a safety/security feature, but that is definitely not the intended purpose of it (it's an accessibility feature for people with special needs display devices where it would be confusing if a page automatically changes). Redirection, forwarding and meta-reloading of pages is a common feature of many web sites (including this very forum!) and should normally be fully transparent. If you want to block redirection by (potentially malicious) scripts, you should have a look at one of the many available Firefox add-ons to help you.
  • Inclusion of an updated version of the Add-on SDK and loader to solve recent issues with SDK/Jetpack add-ons.
Pale Moon now includes its own copy of the Add-on ADK inside the browser, with an updated loader. This should address and fix all of the known compatibility issues with some recently released SDK/Jetpack add-ons.
  • Adjustment of the Quickdial "new tab" feature to have better layout. The default layout now shows a more convenient and appealing grid than in previous versions, with up to 16 most-visited pages.
  • Extension of the address bar shading functionality to more clearly indicate when there is a problem with a secure site. To keep you aware of and alert about potentially broken SSL (secure/encrypted website) connections, Pale Moon 24.0 now shows a red border around the address bar when there is a problem. Problems with SSL are commonly boken SSL encryption and mixed content. Even if you allow mixed active content for a site, Pale Moon will continue to warn you this way that the connection should not be trusted, and that you should be careful about entering any sensitive data.
  • New way of handling plugins with control on a per-site basis. An extensive description can be found in this thread.
  • Unification of version numbers. x86 and x64 will from this point forward use the same version number (and icon) without an architecture designation. This will solve potential compatibility issues on new major versions, as well as the superfluous compatibility check when switching between x86 and x64 on the same profile.

A note about features different from Firefox
Pale Moon 24.0 deviates from Firefox in a number of ways. The most important changes are outlined below:
  • Pale Moon retains the graphical tab switching pane with quick filter in lieu of the removed Tab Groups feature.
The tab switching pane is accessed from Ctrl+Tab -> Show all {n} tabs or by hitting Ctrl+Shift+Tab
  • Pale Moon retains the option to hide the tab bar with only one tab. If you prefer to work with multiple, single-page windows, you won't be wasting any screen space. Like in Firefox versions prior to 23, there is an option to "Always show the tab bar" in your Options -> Tabs pane to control this feature.
  • Pale Moon retains and expands on the browser-wide option to load images in web pages. In your Options -> Content pane, you will find options to apply to the browser overall:
    • - Load images automatically: loads images in web pages automatically (the default) if the are not otherwise blocked per-site
    • - Never load images: prevent images from loading, e.g. very useful for very slow wireless/sat connections or on tightly-metered connections to save bandwidth and allowed internet volume
    • - Originating server only: only loads images from the website you are visiting, and doesn't load images from other sites. Your results may vary with this option selected
In addition, you can fine-tune this behavior per-site by checking "Page info" (in the right-click menu of a page) -> Permissions -> "Load images"
  • More recovery options in the safe mode dialog box. Contrary to Firefox which only allows you to start in safe mode or to completely reset your user profile, Pale Moon offers you a number of options for troubleshooting without having to completely reset or do advanced troubleshooting in safe mode manually. You will have the option to Disable all add-ons and start the browser that way, Reset toolbars and controls (if the UI is messed up), Reset the bookmarks database in case of serious corruption, Reset all user preferences, and reset search providers in case they got corrupted or hijacked.
Resetting your profile is instead done from Help -> Troubleshooting information after you have started the browser, in case of serious trouble (hopefully you won't need this very often ;) ).
  • Pale Moon retains the "Send Link" "Send Page" options for quick sending of a URL in your default e-mail client. This saves you from having to manually copy and paste the URL of a page.
  • Pale Moon displays secure sites differently than Firefox - for a more in-depth explanation, see this post.
  • No WebRTC. Pale Moon does not include WebRTC functionality.
Both by popular vote and because it would go beyond the scope of a web browser, WebRTC is not included in Pale Moon. Pale Moon aims to remain a web browser and not become a pseudo-voice/video chat client; there are plenty of dedicated programs out there for that purpose already. In addition, it's not even a W3C recommendation or part of any standard at the moment.
  • No Telemetry, no Health Report. Pale Moon values your privacy and will not collect, store or send any data about the browser's behavior (and as a result, your browsing behavior) anywhere.

Pale Moon 24.0.1

Changelog:
  • Fix for unreadable address bar text when visiting a broken or mixed-mode SSL site on certain systems (with a dark Windows color scheme with white text).
  • Fix for an incorrect browser cache size default when first starting the browser. (regression)
Note: If you have used version 24.0, then please check your Options -> Advanced -> Network tab, and if the cache size is set to "1024", change it back to its default "250" to prevent unnecessary use of disk space and potential slowing of the browser.
  • Fix for themes not applying to Private Browsing windows. (regression)
  • A small update to the new icon to fix some visual issues with it.
  • Reduction of visual friction and CPU usage on some operations by disabling smooth scrolling on it by default (e.g. Home/End keys).

Pale Moon 24.0.2

Changelog:
Another small update but important enough to push out as fast as possible. Sorry for the rapid point releases, everyone!

This update fixes:
  • User interface paint issues (blank/empty controls and address bar) that would occur in some cases when viewing standalone images.
  • Excessive processor usage in some cases when viewing standalone images.
  • Slow thumbnail creation when viewing standalone images.

These issues are all caused by the same piece of code that should have been updated in Firefox by Mozilla a long time ago, but never was. I've replaced it with a more efficient version of the thumbnail generation code, which has the following effects:
  • Thumbnails will be created for (much) larger sized images. There is still a limit and excessively large images will not be processed, but most images will have a thumbnail drawn now.
  • Lower processor usage.
  • The address bar shows a generic graphics icon instead of the thumbnail when viewing an image file; thumbnails will only be shown in the tab header.
  • browser.chrome.image_icons.max_size no longer has an effect, with the exception of setting it to 0 - this will disable thumbnail creation.
The preference is still used, but only if the browser for whatever reason is unable to draw the thumbnail with the new method, in which case it will fall back to the previous (Firefox-equivalent) method.

Other changes:
  • Completed consolidation of the source tree -- from this point forward, there won't be separate source trees for different architectures anymore.

Pale Moon 24.1.1

Changelog:
A rapid point release to Pale Moon 24.1.0, to re-enable the 2 encryption methods disabled in 24.1.0 by default.
No other changes were made in this point release, it's a minor update. If you have already updated to 24.1.0, it's suggested that you use the internal updater in Help -> About to update your browser to minimize the time needed to update.

Changelog der 24.1.0:
Pale Moon 24.1.0 is an update to the browser that fixes a number of security and user interface issues, and adds the feed icon in the address bar.

Fixes:
  • MFSA 2013-102 Use-after-free in HTML document templates.
  • MFSA 2013-101 Memory corruption in workers.
  • MFSA 2013-100 Miscellaneous use-after-free issues found through ASAN fuzzing.
  • MFSA 2013-99 Security bypass of PDF.js checks using iframes.
  • MFSA 2013-98 Use-after-free when updating offline cache.
  • MFSA 2013-97 Writing to cycle collected object during image decoding.
  • MFSA 2013-96 Improperly initialized memory and overflows in some JavaScript functions.
  • MFSA 2013-95 Access violation with XSLT and uninitialized data.
  • MFSA 2013-94 Spoofing addressbar though SELECT element.
  • MFSA 2013-93 Miscellaneous memory safety hazards.
  • Security + cleanup fix: No longer store empty event handlers.
  • User interface: Fix for the classic downloads window having a blank title with no running downloads.
  • User interface: Fix of the drop-down menu "double entry" in the all-tabs list as-a-menu setup.

Changes:
  • Extensions are now set to automatically update by default. Because many users fail to do the occasional check to see if there are updates available to their extensions, the default is to automatically check and install available updates to extensions from this version forward to give the best possible browsing experience. If you prefer to check manually, make sure to change the setting accordingly in your add-on manager.
It should be noted that extensions specifically marked as not compatible with Pale Moon/Firefox 24.* will not be installed, and you may still see version numbers lower than the versions marked as "latest" on addons.mozilla.org - this is correct, as it means the extension was updated for compatibility with changes in later Firefox versions (Mozilla is making a lot of UI changes that require extension updates).
  • Two SSL ciphers that are considered weak are disabled by default (RSA-RC4-128-MD5 and RSA-RC4-128-SHA). If you are having trouble reaching certain encrypted sites that exclusively use these encryption methods, you should ask the site owners to update their SSL configuration to allow stronger encryption. As a workaround, you can enable the ciphers by installing the Pale Moon Commander add-on and changing the available ciphers there, or by setting security.ssl3.rsa_rc4_128_md5 and security.ssl3.rsa_rc4_128_sha to true in about:config

New Features:
  • When there is a web feed available on a website, Pale Moon will now display a feed indicator on the right side of the address bar to indicate that feeds are available. You can click this icon to subscribe to feeds.
If you don't want this indicator, set browser.urlbar.rss to false in about:config
    Technical details:
    [list]
  • This feed indicator/button was present in older versions of Firefox but was removed because "some metrics indicated it was the least clicked element" in the UI. The conclusion was drawn that the icon, even if it also served as a visual indicator (without clicks), should be removed.* A web feed toolbar button was later introduced because of unhappy feedback by the Firefox users who actually appreciated this indicator, but in a way that's a lot less elegant. Pale Moon therefore restores this indicator/button in the address bar in this version.
  • If you want to control the web feed element through CSS, use the selector #ub-feed-button

* Note that this approach has a number of flaws, the most obvious being that "if you remove the least used element, another element will become least used and eligible for removal" which would result in an interface with a single button in the end  -- Another issue is that clicks aren't a good indicator for a visual element, nor the fact that the frequency of use would be an indicator of "how desirable it is to have". How often do you use your life insurance? ;)

Pale Moon 24.1.2

Changelog:
  • Update of the NSPR library to 4.10.2 RTM.
  • Update of the Security library (NSS) to 3.15.3 (alternative branch) to pick up a number of fixes for https connections.
  • Fix (finally) of the menu list of tabs when browser.allTabs.previews is set to false. It would stick the top entry, not properly highlight the selected tab, and would generally be unpleasant and stubborn when tabs were moved or closed. This should all be corrected now.
  • Additional feature: Previously, tabs would immediately resize to fill the tab bar when you would close them. Mozilla changed this a (long) while back to cater to "rapidly closing multiple tabs without moving the mouse" and to resize you have to move the mouse out of the tab bar. A good number of Firefox/Pale Moon users don't like this behavior, but the fix to make this configurable was in the end rejected by the Mozilla UX team, so I opted for my own implementation in Pale Moon. New pref: browser.tabs.resize_immediately - set this preference to true to immediately resize other tabs when closing a tab.
Many thanks to David for doing the required research in bug #667607 to implement this feature!
  • Rework of the multi-core routine and removal of OpenMP code and the related library (Microsoft's implementation is old, limited, and won't be updated/improved; in addition it prevented some compiler optimizations that could now be used again).
Side note: Even though previous versions of Pale Moon might have still run on Windows XP SP2 even though SP3 is a minimum requirement, you will now get an error when trying to start the browser on SP2. Please update to Service Pack 3 (You should anyway, SP2 is not safe to run on)
  • The accessibility back-end for "Find as you type" has been disabled completely to prevent this setting from breaking websites with HTML5 input fields (not compatible with FAYT).

Pale Moon 24.2.0

Changelog:
  • Update of the new-tab routine: When opening a new tab, focus will now only be on the address bar if you open a blank tab or the Quick Dial page, and focus will be on the page content otherwise (Pale Moon start page or custom URL). This means starting a search from the Pale Moon start page is now easier than ever: wait for the page to load, and focus will automatically be on the search bar - type away!
  • Compatibility issues between QuickFind/Find-as-you-Type and HTML5 input fields in forms fixed.
This long-standing issue in the Mozilla code prevented Pale Moon from properly using HTML5 input (form) fields when the accessibility feature for Find-as-you-type enabled (see previous version release notes). After temporarily disabling this accessibility feature, to prevent people from having broken forms, this incompatibility has now been worked around. Please note that it remains a feature that is not intended as part of the Pale Moon feature set and will likely be removed from the browser in the future for various reasons. "QuickFind" will remain present, which is the same routine but requires a keystroke to indicate to the browser that you want to start searching (slash / ) instead of "any key" (which is a too ambiguous way to work with an application).
  • New advanced feature: Later versions of the Firefox code will automatically place the browser window fully on a visible portion of the screen. If you prefer having the browser window positioned partially off-screen and want to prevent this automatic resizing and repositioning when starting a new session, create a new boolean preference in about:config called browser.sessionstore.exactPos and set it to true.
Obviously, this feature requires that you have "Restore windows and tabs from last time" selected in General options, as it's part of restoring your browsing window to the previous session state.
  • Updated the localization of the status bar code with the following locales: en-GB, es-MX, es-AR, it, pl.
Setting your locale to any of these will now also see the Status Bar options in your chosen language.
  • Fix for a security issue with script event handlers.
